Eirgrid

EirGrid It all began in 2006.
This was the year EirGrid was founded and tasked with the role of operating and developing the electricity transmission grid in Ireland.
EirGrid’s role is to transport electricity from power plants and renewable sources, such as wind and solar farms, across the grid ensuring it gets to where it is needed in the country. This work keeps the lights on in homes, schools, farms and businesses across Ireland.
We also plan ahead for future growth, improving and strengthening the grid infrastructure in Ireland. A better electricity supply means greater prosperity in the years ahead.
We are a state-owned commercial company.
EirGrid holds licences as the independent electricity Transmission System Operator and Market Operator in the wholesale trading system in Ireland. We also own System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI Ltd), the licenced TSO and market operator in Northern Ireland. The Single Electricity Market Operator is part of the EirGrid Group, and operates the Single Electricity Market on the island of Ireland.

In its role of TSO in Ireland, EirGrid operates and maintains a safe, secure, reliable, economical and efficient supply of electricity.
