Turmec has an exciting opportunity for an R&D Engineer to join our expanding team. The successful candidate will play a key role in the research, development and continuous improvement of Turmec's products, equipment and engineering solutions within the recycling and material handling industries.
Working closely with Engineering, Production, Sales, Supply Chain and other key stakeholders, the R&D Engineer will be responsible for developing innovative engineering concepts through design, prototype, testing, validation and implementation.
The successful candidate will be technically strong, curious and
solutions-focused, with the ability to challenge existing designs and identify
opportunities to improve product performance, reliability, manufacturability
and cost effectiveness.
Responsibilities
- Research and develop current products, new technologies and engineering solutions for the recycling and material handling industries
- Develop engineering concepts from initial idea through detailed design, prototype, testing, validation and implementation
- Design components, assemblies and material handling equipment using CREO/SolidWorks or equivalent 3D CAD software
- Produce detailed 3D models, drawings, specifications and technical documentation.
- Plan, coordinate and conduct prototype builds, trials and engineering testing
- Analyse test results and use findings to optimise product performance, reliability and functionality
- Identify opportunities to improve existing Turmec products through design optimisation and value engineering
- Participate in design reviews, product integration and technical problem-solving
- Investigate engineering issues and undertake root-cause analysis to develop effective and sustainable solutions
- Work closely with Production and Supply Chain to ensure new designs are suitable for manufacture, assembly and ongoing service
- Evaluate new materials, components, technologies and manufacturing methods
- Manage assigned R&D projects, including specifications, timelines, testing, documentation and project close-out
- Maintain appropriate technical records and documentation relating to R&D activities, design changes, testing and validation
- Collaborate with customers, suppliers and internal stakeholders where required to understand technical requirements and develop appropriate solutions
- Keep up to date with emerging technologies and engineering developments relevant to Turmec's products and markets
- Promote a culture of innovation, continuous improvement and engineering excellence across the business
Qualifications
Relevant third-level qualification/Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical
Engineering, Product Design Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum 3+ years' experience in a mechanical design, product development, R&D or similar engineering role
- Strong mechanical design and engineering fundamentals
- Experience using CREO and/or SolidWorks is desirable
- Experience in prototype development, product testing and design validation would be advantageous
- Experience within material handling, recycling, manufacturing, heavy engineering or machinery environments would be beneficial
- Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
- Ability to take an engineering concept and develop it into a practical, manufacturable solution
- Commercial awareness with an understanding of cost, manufacturability and value engineering
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal skills
- Ability to work effectively across Engineering, Production, Supply Chain and other departments
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to manage competing priorities and work to agreed project deadlines
- Innovative and inquisitive approach, with a willingness to challenge existing designs and identify better ways of doing things
