Free public WIFI now in Navan Town Centre

County Meath’s free public WIFI is now operational in Navan town centre.  Meath County Council is delivering the European Commission’s WIFI4EU programme with additional support from the Department of Rural & Community Development.

On Thursday, Meath County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr. David Gilroy, Chief Executive Jackie Maguire, Mayor of Navan Cllr. Francis Deane, Paula McCaul, CEO of County Meath Chamber, John Farrelly from DNG Royal County,  Donna Farrell of Marsh Mackey Recruitment and Eimear Reynolds from Bakelicious gathered in the Market Square to welcome the availability of public Wi-Fi in Navan’s historic core.

The WIFI4EU programme sees the investment of over €120 million across the European Union to see the introduction of freely accessible high speed across centres of human life.

Speaking at the launch Mayor of Navan, Cllr. Francis Deane said, “The service in Navan is only possible thanks to the town’s businesses that have been very supportive of the project. The service is being supported by La Royal Day Spa, Steen O’Reilly Solicitors, The Central Bar, Peadar Tóibín TD, John Joyce Interiors, Marsh Mackey, Staunton’s Pharmacy, Bakelicious, Simply Honest Café, Smith Expert Electrical, Singer Sew Shop, The Solstice Arts Centre and DNG Royal County. Coverage is also provided by Meath County Council covering Abbey St. car park and the bus stop.”

Paula McCaul from County Meath Chamber also thanked the businesses for their support and welcomes the delivery of the WiFi4EU network in Navan saying, “The recent pandemic has demonstrated the need for people to have access to the internet to carry out basic functions such as shopping, banking, ordering taxis, payment of bills and access to information or services.  As we look forward to the lifting of Covid restrictions and the reopening of our economy, Navan’s WIFI4EU network will be a welcome boost for Navan town enabling shoppers to click and collect, dwell longer and support the wide variety of businesses and services in the town by day as well as the evening and night-time economy in Navan’s popular Purple Flag areas.  The public relam works continue in Navan and we are currently working with Navan businesses and Meath Co Co to plan for outdoor seating in Navan and a people focused town centre to which FREE on street wifi will be hugely complimentary.  It is vital that we all pull together to support the business community who have endured so many set backs over the past year.

Cormac McCann, Broadband Officer for Meath County Council wanted to thank the businesses in Navan who have supported the initiative. He also added, “Free public WIFI will bring several benefits for traders, residents and visitors to the town. We hope that shoppers will connect to the network and share their lunch, latest purchases or beauty treatments online to show off what Navan has to provide for people visiting the town.”

Users will be able to access the network by switching on the Wi-Fi on their device and joining the WIFI4EU network.
